1. Detected Enemy Army
2. Suggested counter army
Low-gold defensive unit with bonus damage against cavalry. Numbers, upgrades and positioning matter.
Cost-effective trash counter to archers with massive pierce armor and bonus damage.
3. Required Villager Economy Balance
Estimate for 2 primary-counter buildings + 2 secondary-counter buildings and 1 siege building if recommended. Includes reseeding with unupgraded economy. Excludes Town Center production and research.
Adjust buildings and upgrades in the AoE2 macro calculatorGeneric units at the selected age: upgrades and civilization access must be checked in the tech tree. No civilization bonuses, research costs, or Town Center production are included. Economy uses unupgraded farms and includes reseeding.
How to turn a recommendation into a plan
- Identify the main threat and its support: countering only Knights can leave you exposed to their Crossbowmen.
- Check age, upgrades and units available to your civilization before investing in a transition.
- Budget separately for new buildings and upgrades. The economy shown sustains a standard production setup; it does not calculate how many troops win the battle.
Counter & Combat FAQs
What counters Knights in AoE2?
The Spearman line offers a low-gold defensive answer to cavalry. Camels offer mobility and Monks can turn expensive units against their owner. Numbers, upgrades and positioning matter: an isolated Pikeman is not a guarantee against a Knight. Check which options your civilization can train.
What counters Archers and Crossbowmen?
Skirmishers are a common response thanks to pierce armor and bonus damage against archers. From Castle Age, Mangonels threaten packed ranged units, but need protection and can be dodged. Add a second unit if the opponent protects archers with cavalry.
Is this a combat simulator?
No. It is a rule-based recommendation tool that weighs the enemy composition and suggests unit families and support. It does not simulate individual attacks, terrain, micro, exact army ratios or every civilization’s technology availability.
How is the economy estimate calculated?
It assumes two buildings producing the primary counter, two producing the secondary counter and one siege building when suggested. It uses the same macro model with unupgraded farms (20.3 food/min), wood (23.4/min) and gold (22.8/min), rounding up and including farm reseeding. It excludes Town Centers, new buildings, research and civilization bonuses. Use the macro calculator to adjust production and economic upgrades.
Why can a counter still lose?
A counter is an advantage in a particular matchup, not a promise to win. Being outnumbered, missing upgrades, fighting uphill or reaching combat in small groups can outweigh that advantage. Scout the whole army and consider whether you can afford the transition.
